The Prescript

The Prescript of an ancient letter had three components: 1) sender of the letter, 2) the recipient of the letter, and 3) a greeting. Although unusual for most ancient letters, Paul typically expanded these elements with information he considered relevant to the subject of the letter. The prescript of Romans is no exception.

1. Sender

• Paul speaks of himself as a servant and apostle.
• He presents Jesus in terms of his flesh and Spirit.
• He speaks of his call to the Gentiles

2. Recipient

· He says the Romans are loved by God and called

3. Greeting

· He gives his standard grace and peace greeting, combining elements of Jewish and Gentile greetings.
